The Portland Shotokan Dojo has been open at the historic Friendly House Community Center since 1997. Our Dojo Leader is Stuart Iwasaki, a 3rd degree black belt and student of Mr. Tsutomu Ohshima. Stuart began training at age 17 at the Maryknoll Shotokan Karate Dojo under current Shihan, John Teramoto. He later trained at the Cal State Long Beach Dojo under Senior Instructor Don Dupree and at the Long Beach and Paramount Dojos under Senior Instructors Tom Muzila and Randy McClure. Stuart has competed in SKA Nisei Week Tournaments, and has attended over 35 Special Trainings.
Brian Borrello, 3rd degree black belt, began Karate training in 1984 at Arizona State University. Brian founded and led the New Orleans Shotokan Club at Loyola University from 1989 to 1996 and has given many public demonstrations and run several self-defense clinics.
Teaching at the dojo is also supported by a third instructor, John Hill, a 2nd degree black belt.
